Song of the Day (Monday FUNK edition & one bonus RnB joint & Random story from summer in BK )

This is the ultimate funk discovery of this year for me.

I love Slave and I bloody love Maze.

One evening after I first moved in Bed-Stuy in Brooklyn sometime in July I was walking around the hood after a recording session with a good friend’s band ( See sneak footage of the sesh here –  The Saturators – Check out their stuff too – My good friend Misha is the head Saturator and is THE guy for knowing what’s up in the city ), seeing what food was about and what drinks were flowing and what a saturday night looked like in my new area.

I stumbled upon an amphitheatre that was hosting one of the free outdoor parties…

This is where I was first introduced to the legendary Maze song above, and since then I haven’t stopped playing it!

Sunday Social Pleaz

This morning I was lucky enough to stumble upon a snippet from the above talk at Yale with Lady Gaga for Emotion Revolution. LG was on form, doing her best to instill inspiration and compassion towards one another, starting with basic interactions in our everyday life.

Standard greetings can be the question ‘How are you?’ or, in the UK it is most common to hear ‘Hi, You alright?’ (pronounced Hiyur ~rite – lol ) let’s not be standard with our responses alllll the time…

We are ‘busy’ in our lives and we don’t have ‘time’ for emotional breakthroughs ‘all of the time’, but let’s be real babes.

timeisnow

It doesn’t even have to be a painful or negative emotional response, the reply could simply ‘ yo waddddupppppppppppp’ 😀 or ‘Oh no I shouldn’t have just

(yes I did mean to not finish that, I always

Anyway…

Lady Gaga’s words really inspired me and I hope they inspire you too.

I am inspired to be…

Honest.

Open.

Deep.

Careful.

Kind.

Emotional inquisition can cause rifts in relationships, we never mean to go into unchartered waters but I, for sure, always seem to stumble onto dangerous ground.

On the flip side, the depth accidentally lead me to a nourishing practice. I discovered Yoga in the darkness and through the initial vanity based infatuation I started to clear streams for the light, and it wasn’t long before I was using it to evolve instead of punish ( my inner narrative became increasingly kind and loving instead of berating and cruel towards myself and others )

I had to sit lovingly in my pain, in my heartbreak, in my own messy web that I had created since my yout. By learning to be in the moment and present, I started to check in with myself honestly, and surprisingly discovered a twinkling of genuine clarity and peace!

If and when you can, plant seeds of stillness all over and all over each other. The pain may (probably will tbh) come first, but things can seem worse before they are better! PROMISE

Thank God, The Universe, My Family, Yoga, Music, and everything that stopped my spiral before I even browsed the brochure for membership of the 27 club (RIP The Great Minds who were unlucky).

My dance with Vegetables – DIY 1

In the last year or so I have, little by little, fallen into vegetarianism and dipped my toe into Vegan life.

It could be something to do with my attempt at Yogic living, but I haven’t consciously decided, as such, to officially denounce meat. I have, a few times, officially denounced dairy, but I am learning as time passes how difficult it can be to cut that all the way out, especially only having rediscovered custard as an adult in the last month or so. Ha! (i am currently trawling the net for the best non dairy custard recipe so if I find a good one, I will share. Tried and Tested, I can assure you!)

I am having a LOT of fun cooking and being inventive with food choices and spots to eat at. Naturally, I aim for Organic wherever possible and lucky for me in the area I mostly work and live it is very accessible and affordable for me to eat very well. Almost too accessible sometimes!

This afternoon I had a hankering for some pasta so I whipped up a very basic meal but added my trusted spices and coconut oil to zazz it up. I decided to combine with black coffee, because, why not 🙂

Ingredients –

coconut oil

Himalayan pink salt

black pepper

juice from 1 lemon

1x red onion

2x garlic cloves

1/2 yellow pepper

Spinach

Long stemmed broccoli

Vine cherry tomatoes

Wholewheat pasta

All natural sugar free pasta sauce (I chose spicy and locally made)

Cayenne Pepper

Cinnamon

I will, every now and again, share the kinds of things I whip up quick-style when I am hungry at home.

Also look out for big-ups for my favourite spots around town. So many good food places in Brighton we really are blessed!!

Song of the day – No sleep for the Sunburn addition!

So up until I heard a podcast from Brighton DJ, Mike Panteli around the pool at the Villa I had NO idea that the Kelly Rowland version of this song wasn’t the original! D’oh Alex, D’oh to you, you fool!

I always loved that song, and thought that whomever had written it was a real gifted melody writer. I was right!

Daylight is always a surprise no matter the circumstance, and my circumstance this morning spurred all sorts of positive energy.

So I tip my hat to Womack for writing a track around a time of day that truly is special and magical.

Boom Bobby, thanks Doll. You are a ledge.

My Soul Sisters – Pisces Sunset Sister

After seeing ‘The other woman’ I got to thinking about my friends and how lucky I am to have such an amazing circle of strong, independent and intelligent female friends! Not to mention adventurous!

I am going to dedicate a series of posts to explaining why I admire each of them, and what makes this specific group of women so interesting!

Up first…Pisces Sunset Sister

me n chan ushuaiaThis lady and I have actually known each other since Infant school (I don’t want to say 20 years but it’s close!) We have always had one of those weird connections, and always seemed to appear in each other’s lives at random but perfect times. Even when we had no idea we were close to each other we were still right there (Literally we lived a street apart at a time when we weren’t so close and had no idea until a while after!).

She is so amazing because she maintains a level of class like no other and works like a trooper. For a few years now she has been working her way up the ranks of the oldest premier ‘members only’ establishment in London (Beyonce regularly visits there when in the UK, along with royalty and the BRIT awards also had their official after party there earlier on this year too), and stuck out the savage savage SAVAGE commute with the idiotic National Rail service in the UK.

Pisces sister is truly an Independent woman, and I admire her courage in taking such a big leap initially in taking a job so far away from Brighton in every sense, and also for sticking it out and riding through the grind that puts most people I know to shame! #25HappyHealthyDaysinNYC Day 3!

Day 3- Meatball Monday

Today I decided to stop planning out  my last 3 weeks in anticipation of my time here never ending, and just roll with whatever happens.

20140519_193432_SophiaAs per usual, I came to this conclusion whilst chillin’ on the porch with my housemate. I planned on visiting the gym and not eating white carbs and sugar until Friday, to give my body a bit of a break after the ice cream and cookies of the weekend! So although I didn’t make my cardio at the gym, I did make yoga (with my favourite sub teacher too! – I think she is magic, I always feel super aligned after her classes) and I did walk a lot around Bushwick.

Food wise- I did have green juice and salad, but did end up joining my housemate’s famous meatballs and spaghetti evening. Continue reading “#25HappyHealthyDaysinNYC Day 3!”

Yoga with Adrienne NYC meetup!

One of the key figures in my Yoga journey has been Adrienne and imagine my happiness when I stumbled upon her video announcement of her taking a class in NYC!

The way that Adrienne teaches is very clear and direct and helped me iron out some of my creases remotely through her channel, and I am so grateful for the knowledge she imparts to her viewers.

If you are new to yoga or just want some different sequences to add to your bag of tricks I would definitely check her out! Her channel is especially handy for when you can’t get to class for any reason.

Check the beautifully filmed video out – bonus points if you can spot your favourite British blogger 😀

See Yoga with Adriene on YouTube.

20140518_112139_Sophia_RadDay 1

So this is my new idea for a series of blog posts to document my last 25 days in the states for a while!

I named it HappyHealthy to incorporate mental health as well as physical health.

As someone who struggles with depression and being out here I have had no choice but to put myself under the microscope a bit. Being by myself has been an excellent opportunity to learn about me and has enabled me to look out for trigger points or patterns that send me down into a few days (used to be weeks would go by under the black cloud, with a few days of ‘up’ peppered in) under the black cloud.

Instead of it just being ‘Healthy’ which implies physical health and can lead to the start of obsessive unhealthy cycles for me, I decided to make the most of my time left here in the happiest way I see fit. Continue reading “#25HappyHealthyDaysinNYC”
