Sunday Social Pleaz

This morning I was lucky enough to stumble upon a snippet from the above talk at Yale with Lady Gaga for Emotion Revolution. LG was on form, doing her best to instill inspiration and compassion towards one another, starting with basic interactions in our everyday life.

Standard greetings can be the question ‘How are you?’ or, in the UK it is most common to hear ‘Hi, You alright?’ (pronounced Hiyur ~rite – lol ) let’s not be standard with our responses alllll the time…

We are ‘busy’ in our lives and we don’t have ‘time’ for emotional breakthroughs ‘all of the time’, but let’s be real babes.

Emotional inquisition can cause rifts in relationships, we never mean to go into unchartered waters but I, for sure, always seem to stumble onto dangerous ground.

On the flip side, the depth accidentally lead me to a nourishing practice. I discovered Yoga in the darkness and through the initial vanity based infatuation I started to clear streams for the light, and it wasn’t long before I was using it to evolve instead of punish ( my inner narrative became increasingly kind and loving instead of berating and cruel towards myself and others )

I had to sit lovingly in my pain, in my heartbreak, in my own messy web that I had created since my yout. By learning to be in the moment and present, I started to check in with myself honestly, and surprisingly discovered a twinkling of genuine clarity and peace!

If and when you can, plant seeds of stillness all over and all over each other. The pain may (probably will tbh) come first, but things can seem worse before they are better! PROMISE

My dance with Vegetables – DIY 1

In the last year or so I have, little by little, fallen into vegetarianism and dipped my toe into Vegan life.

It could be something to do with my attempt at Yogic living, but I haven’t consciously decided, as such, to officially denounce meat. I have, a few times, officially denounced dairy, but I am learning as time passes how difficult it can be to cut that all the way out, especially only having rediscovered custard as an adult in the last month or so. Ha! (i am currently trawling the net for the best non dairy custard recipe so if I find a good one, I will share. Tried and Tested, I can assure you!)

I am having a LOT of fun cooking and being inventive with food choices and spots to eat at. Naturally, I aim for Organic wherever possible and lucky for me in the area I mostly work and live it is very accessible and affordable for me to eat very well. Almost too accessible sometimes!

This afternoon I had a hankering for some pasta so I whipped up a very basic meal but added my trusted spices and coconut oil to zazz it up. I decided to combine with black coffee, because, why not 🙂

Ingredients –

coconut oil

Himalayan pink salt

black pepper

juice from 1 lemon

1x red onion

2x garlic cloves

1/2 yellow pepper

Spinach

Long stemmed broccoli

Vine cherry tomatoes

Wholewheat pasta

All natural sugar free pasta sauce (I chose spicy and locally made)

Cayenne Pepper

Cinnamon

I will, every now and again, share the kinds of things I whip up quick-style when I am hungry at home.

#25HappyHealthyDaysinNYC -Days 7/8 – Memorial Day weekend! Part 1

The calm before the Carnage!

My first experience of Memorial Day weekend was an absolute blast. What an awesome way to kick off the summer.

I thought I would bundle the days together as the weekend feels as though it was one party filled day!

Friday started super productive with a gym sesh, lots of writing (at my new favourite daytime haunt- Sky Town – Bushwick – Bangin teas and coffee and don’t even go there about the omelettes- dayum!) and catching up on things, so that was good vibes.

I also managed to sync up with my favourite Pisces sister and have an impromptu Facetime. It was one of those weird ‘right place right time’ moments as I only accidently called her but she called me right back and we both had time to have a good old natter.

Whilst I was having these good vibes I had the idea for a party for one of the housemates who’s moving out, so I put the word out and before I knew it a party was on our hands. Then, out of nowhere, my blues came and my vibes dropped so low that I wasn’t fun at all. Bummer! (Pretty sure it was my own fault for being such a coffee keeno that day in my productive state) Luckily it was a fairly low-key event with a few of the MVPs missing so I managed to duck fairly early. No muss no fuss as they say.

So Saturday I woke up refreshed and hungry! All I had eaten the day before was veggie stuff so I was feeling pretty reset in my body and wanted to continue the healthy vibes so I had some nuts for breakfast I think, and then went on to have a fresh green juice and sushi! Yum!Image

The problem with me is the earlier I eat the more calories I end up consuming throughout the day. Once I start eating I find it pretty hard to stop, Food is definitely an issue for me – but that is a post for another time for sure. That day I went on to eat too much cereal and ordered Indian food for dinner, with desserts AND rice (I never normally have rice – usually just have tandoori veg with the naan). Too much food for one person in one day.

Anyway, back to Saturday!

Mood wise I was ok, but not on top of the world, not sure why but I go through quite extreme ups and downs so I have learnt just to ride it out. It was probably the weather- it was pretty grey! Managed to chill on the porch and that always gets me back to feeling good. People watching on my block is always a trip. Such a diverse neighbourhood that there is always enough to keep me occupied being a nosy Rosie.

Luckily, life always gives you exactly what you need and upon my return from an unsuccessful trip to Staples in the pissing rain my housemate suggested a sunset session was in order. And not just any sunset session, we went on a rooftop! I was on a Rooftop, in Brooklyn, watching the sunset. YES! Defo something checked off my bucket list. The sky cleared up enough for the gorgeous sun to shine through onto the clouds and we saw some pretty interesting shapes and colours.

Although my trip to staples was unsuccessful I did manage to get pretty lost on my travels from Halsey st to Greenpoint and along the way I saw all the phat Graf around the Morgan Ave L stop. So all was not lost, at first I was pretty annoyed that I was so lost but then the rain stopped and I was surrounded by very cool artwork. Life is pretty amazing sometimes!

Day 3- Meatball Monday

Today I decided to stop planning out  my last 3 weeks in anticipation of my time here never ending, and just roll with whatever happens.

20140519_193432_SophiaAs per usual, I came to this conclusion whilst chillin’ on the porch with my housemate. I planned on visiting the gym and not eating white carbs and sugar until Friday, to give my body a bit of a break after the ice cream and cookies of the weekend! So although I didn’t make my cardio at the gym, I did make yoga (with my favourite sub teacher too! – I think she is magic, I always feel super aligned after her classes) and I did walk a lot around Bushwick.

Food wise- I did have green juice and salad, but did end up joining my housemate’s famous meatballs and spaghetti evening. Continue reading “#25HappyHealthyDaysinNYC Day 3!”
