Sunday Social Pleaz

This morning I was lucky enough to stumble upon a snippet from the above talk at Yale with Lady Gaga for Emotion Revolution. LG was on form, doing her best to instill inspiration and compassion towards one another, starting with basic interactions in our everyday life.

Standard greetings can be the question ‘How are you?’ or, in the UK it is most common to hear ‘Hi, You alright?’ (pronounced Hiyur ~rite – lol ) let’s not be standard with our responses alllll the time…

We are ‘busy’ in our lives and we don’t have ‘time’ for emotional breakthroughs ‘all of the time’, but let’s be real babes.

Honest.

Deep.

Careful.

Kind.

Emotional inquisition can cause rifts in relationships, we never mean to go into unchartered waters but I, for sure, always seem to stumble onto dangerous ground.

On the flip side, the depth accidentally lead me to a nourishing practice. I discovered Yoga in the darkness and through the initial vanity based infatuation I started to clear streams for the light, and it wasn’t long before I was using it to evolve instead of punish ( my inner narrative became increasingly kind and loving instead of berating and cruel towards myself and others )

I had to sit lovingly in my pain, in my heartbreak, in my own messy web that I had created since my yout. By learning to be in the moment and present, I started to check in with myself honestly, and surprisingly discovered a twinkling of genuine clarity and peace!

If and when you can, plant seeds of stillness all over and all over each other. The pain may (probably will tbh) come first, but things can seem worse before they are better! PROMISE

I have been lucky enough to call this lady one of my very best friends in the whole world for about 13years now!!

Not only is she an amazing photographer and person in general, she makes stunning documentaries about her travels and shares them with us to see!

Sophie is always positive, supportive and the life of the party.

I cannot believe how lucky I am to have her at the other end of the phone whenever the time is right!

I have travelled all over the show watching and soaking up tricks and licks in the music lane. Working with producers,  musicians and Yogis for the past few years has given me a crash course in all the things I didn’t even hear of in school or Music College.

But first

WHY YOGA ?! I THOUGHT SINGING is PRACTISING SCALES AND PERFORMing WHY DO I HAVE TO STRETCH and BREATHE SO MUCH? 

Yoga releases tension. Unmanaged tension is cancer to a performance of any kind.

Let alone the voice being your instrument! 

Tension is caused by emotional reaction to an external or internal trigger. Relieveing our bodies of past occurances of stress is a beautiful energetic exchange which can be optimised by Yoga and its asana work.

Yoga also works at stabislising the pelvis and legs to create strong foundations to stand from. If your foundations are not strong and stable then your upper body will feel the need to compensate and be ‘on duty’ more regularly and stiffly than needed ergo – stiff necks and frozen shoulders and jaws that lock in the night.

Singing and voice awareness = Vitality! 

Lessons I have most recently learned whilst chasing my own dream of living through my music. You never stop learning at Life!

I.e Recording vocals to performing vocals live. – How important it is to hold extremely close familiarity with your parameters created by your voice at that moment, not your last performance or session, because having this awareness and control will save you in trickier moments occuring on stage or in the booth.

I.e The importance of your physical and mental wellbeing whilst writing, performing and working as a musician and singer. It was, for sure, touched on by Kele Bryan from Eternal (one of my tutors at BIMM ) but her style was more of a circuit training warm up and core strengthening exercises this did not penetrate my interest at the time, and have only really got where she was coming from in the last few years after being living proof that body tension + weak muscles = stressful mind maps.

Why is this so amazing for me?

I love teaching and passing on knowledge. i especially learned SO much recently on my travels and more than ever I want to pass this information along. I had my eyes opened to how things are moving along in the american market, how it differs from here and why us Brits always make waves across the Pond.

The money I make from teaching lessons and passing on information goes directly to the making of my EP and towards my returning to NYC to finish all of the work that had such a magical start to!

Summer Yogi pit stop. UK

After dipping my toes into at the start of the ‘Summer’ with Smile, I picked up sticks for West coast adventures in search of sunshine, knowledge and musical nourishment.

Teaching Yoga to complete beginners ( and family members with various ailments) gave me a lot to think about when preparing the lessons. It was a pleasure getting to know my students; their bodies gave me excellent scope and experience to create interactive sessions. We are always aiming to reconnect our Selves with our natural state of joy and compassion.

(Yoga can help bring to light habitual patterns including self-addressing i.e negative scolding towards oneself  and physical preferences i.e left and right side heavy which can cause poor posture and alignment)

I got the chance to study Kundalini Yoga under Tej in Hollywood…

(‘Nine Treasures Yoga was founded by Tej Kaur Khalsa, a longtime teacher of Kundalini yoga and a student of Yogi Bhajan for over three decades.’ ) 

I found Tej’s classes extremely empowering and invigorating; after feeling like performing 1000s of sun salutations and Vinyasas in the past few years. Kundalini Yoga uses the breath and voice for chanting and opening up the front of the spine and uses small repetitive movements mobilising the arms and back of spine.

I was taken aback by the lack of movement. I am used to from my Astanga and Vinyasa classes, even Hatha and Yin move more and use Asana differently to Kundalini. Kundalini really is an energetic mover as oppose to an oxygen mover. Do not underestimate the movements that are required for these classes though, Chanting and performing some of the repetitive movements for a 3 minute track will cause you to ‘feel the burn’ Sneaky!

I moved to Venice Beach after Hollywood in search of Beach life and Yogi vibes.

I found Yoga Nest and made the most of their amazing intro special and for about 10 days became a part of the family. I learnt the importance of pace and engagement from the beautiful and warm teachers and was lucky enough to take part in a sound bath accompanied vinyasa class. The resonance and vibrations from the singing bowls provided a thickness in the air on top the heat that energised us all through a particularly challenging sequence.

From here I migrated East to get back on board with Daya Yoga studio and to relieve my creative itch by reconnecting with my producers and musicians in Brooklyn.

New York is a place where practising Yoga off the mat is just as ground breaking and uplifting as an asana class.

The Yamas and Niyamas are important ground rules to follow and some of my luck is proof that if you keep the handy 10 in your mind somewhere, as you go about your interactions with New Yorkers, they will recognise the integrity of you.

Everyone goes to the City or stays in the City for a reason and it is easy to forget along the way to living for that reason what the reason for living in The City actually is.

Life! Real-Life experiences that are unmatched by suburban comforts and ‘living comfortably’ without roaches and rats.

Speaking of living comfortably…

…at my last place in Bushwick, BK down in the basement (yes there were Roaches and Mice…) I was lucky enough to share the bottom end of a Duplex with a Yoga practitioner who had been teaching for 20 years! I also had a housemate who was very keen to practise and learn more so I was able to learn and pass on knowledge in our little mini melting pot of Yogis. This helped me keep up my home practise and keep up my teaching hat.

Living life as a Yogi and trying to live as authentically as possible has definitely had an impact on my body and my creative mind.

Through surrendering and letting go whilst jamming and tracking ideas for songs and melodies I was able to relieve a sticky point in my Jaw. Literally!

No word of a lie…

…after my first session with a new producer, I return home sit on the sofa to chill and all of a sudden my Jaw goes *CLICK* and there I go, left side of my jaw unlocked!

I am a chronic teeth clencher and carry mad tension in my jaw so for it to just relax and let go like that after my shit hot session; something in my mind must of relaxed. My Throat chakra must of had a moment of spinning perfectly!

To this day the left side is still looser and open, but the right side knows where it’s headed now, I’m optimistic. ha.

The point is…

…your physical body and mind and chakras and all of that are all interlinked and tensions that are being held in the mind will no doubt be held somewhere in the body.

Face, Neck, Shoulders, Chest, Diaphragm, Back, Hips, Hamstrings, Feet.. even hands and fingers!

My gentle transition from West to East.

The Uber Cab driver from the Greyhound station to my LAX hotel was an absolute blast. I got a cheap ride by using their Pool service, but no1 ended up getting picked up so I still got the cheap ride 😀

My Uber lady was extremely excited about finishing up some of her exams for nursing school and we had such a great and conversation about the wonders of the human body. Amazing to speak to someone coming from a different school.

I was able to give a better understanding for the benefits of Yoga and how it could relate to her post as a nurse, and she was able to shed some light on different modules and all the info Nurses have to know! Not to be underestimated. UberL was telling me about chemistry and the periodic table and the different ways her and her peers were paying their ways through nursing school.

Before I knew it, we were at my hotel and had to sit for a moment to finish up our incessant chatter. UberL was convinced that the way to shake the TSA was to get examples of my music and give them a CD and pretend I am an unknown British Celebrity. I mean, not my idea of a good idea but USA culture loves a good celeb and if they’re British too don’t even try to stop their squeals of excitement! (Although, I do get asked if I am Australian every.single.day – hopefully the passport would X that question)

My LAX hotel is my favorite hotel I have ever stayed in. View of the Runway from my bed! Absolutely incredible watching the planes go in and out from a height that you don’t feel dwarfed by it. I very much felt like I was in a music video, namely the Adele ‘make you feel my love’ piece. I also felt very Anthony Keidis from the Chilis in that room (obviously sober AK). Who knows, maybe I was feeling vibes of other struggling artists that had stayed in the hotel on their way from a – b or maybe West to East like me.

#YogiPost Ahimsa – CHECK. Satya – Here we go…

Last week I kept Ahimsa in mind a lot more than I initially thought I would.

I noticed just by observing others and myself day to day that the internal narration that CONSTANTLY runs my mind started to soften. Tone wise. I realise that the default tone of voice in my head towards myself is preettyyyy aggressive. After all these years of Yoga and travelling and general fun stuff how can my Self still be running the show this way?

Despite all of the inner tellings off I gave myself from both sides of the crazy fence, External stuff started to subside. I am not giving myself such a hard time about what eat and am trusting my inner discernment. I also noticed that my patience with people and life in general improved this week and generally it was a week where I felt comfortable in ‘levelling down’ instead of intensely striving for that ‘level up’ feeling.

I am always anti physical violence, but feel so much more comfortable in expressing that notion as we are now moving into ….

Now… Satya – Truthfulness

This one, to me, feels like it will be easier. (which probably means, I have no idea what I am talking about haha).

I only say this as I have always been hyper sensitive to participating in things that do not line up with my Dharma or my purpose. I am not someone who believes in the whole ‘non quitting’ thing. If something feels bad or wrong or at opposition to the inner voice get out of there man!

Most recently a change I have implemented out of nowhere is becoming a vegetarian. It slowly came about in the last year completely naturally just from me listening to the inner voice. There are still some things for sure that I am having trouble clearing out, but I know that admitting these things goes a long way so I have hope for me yet!

I found when starting to pay attention to my inner narrative I was quite taken aback. I couldn’t believe I had gone so long without actually taking a moment to analyse the kind of talk I was directing towards myself and others. I have always been quite a deep thinker about the world around me, and it had never dawned on me to analyse the language I use internally.

Turns out, I am pretty mean to me! Which was making me mean towards others and then that was then coming back around to be mean to me about myself being mean to others so as you can see that is way.too.much.

And breathe.

Ahimsa has helped me take more responsibility for the chat and crap that I believe in my head. My sense of compassion is stronger and I love it! After the little word I had with myself I realised what is inside is reflected outside, I am finding it easier to keep my feet on the ground. It really is very nice to be nice, so why not give it a go at every single opportunity you have?

Try to tune into the voice that may have been pushed under by the bully boy coach type voice. Or if you have no idea what I mean. Try to create a new lingo for yourself. Maybe try to pick up one new positive adjective a day, and use it as much as possible, to the point where you may even sound silly and it might turn into a bit of laugh! You never know, you might spread some silliness and before you know it we will all be smiling at each other willy nilly! Dun Dun Dun!!! IMG_2133-MOTION

Wednesday – 9.30-10.30 

This location is perfect for Yoga in Sussex. We are lucky enough to be surrounded by the natural wonder of The Downs, and weather permitting, we practise outside. This really helps to keep awareness in the present. Between the birdsong and the Sunshine (like I said, weather permitting – This is still England after all 🙂 ) it really is an enriching way to start your (hump) day.

It is really fulfilling to teach in my hometown in the centre where I have so many memories! From childhood visits to the co-op for the sole purpose of a Thomas the Tank engine gingerbread man, to teenage mischief that included winding up Ricky, the security guard, after school. Come along for this friendly and reflective class, the perfect way to see in your weekend.

Friday mornings (10-11) and Sunday afternoons (4-5)

Now this venue is a bit of a wildcard, but it works!

Generally the room we use for class is utilised for Tea dances and general merriment (Fully stocked bar to the back 😮 ) but we manage to fill the space with our empowering sequences and uplifting vibrations. I tend to focus a lot in this class on mobility of shoulders and neck and the importance of grounding through the feet and the signals that sends to the body they’re supporting.

It really is both scary and exciting to teach Yoga in Brighton. With the multitude of styles, classes and teachers all around it can be a bit nerve racking for me (a new teacher!) to teach in a city that is so particular and mindful in all it offers.

Originally we weren’t going to tackle Brighton classes until the smaller town classes were up and running but I was made aware of the space by a very savvy friend of mine and couldn’t refuse.

Of all my classes this is the one that moves the fastest and I enjoy exploring stronger asanas (postures) with my students.

Smile Yoga – It’s a Family Affair

Honouring the meaning of Yoga, My mother and I have come together to build Smile Yoga to spread Yoga all along the south coast.

Our classes are affordable, accessible and a safe space to allow Beings to just be.

Be whatever that means in that moment without expectation.

In our classes I offer as many modifications as I can, gently willing you to lead yourself toward whatever your mind or body needs at that moment. From guiding your gaze upward in a baby back bend, encouraging length and to deepen, or serving gentle reminders to be kind and honest in your practise. If you feel like staying in child’s pose for the whole hour to restore and recuperate, that is still very much Yoga. In fact, The best kind of Yoga!

Through practising quite seriously for 3 years (after a few years of once a week/blue moon classes) I have developed my understanding and appreciation for the complete science of Yoga.

There are many aspects of Yogic life, and the main entry point for us, this side of Europe, is the physical Asana (posture) practise. We can gather awareness and consideration through taking some time for the temples we live in in an honest and careful manner.

We welcome drop ins, continuing students and any person that has a particular pull towards Yoga.

Please do not hesitate to direct any questions my way, and I can do my best to answer or I may have an idea as to where the answer can be found.
